2013 Modern Art Museum

By listening to the pulse of the land and using clay as the medium, Hsu Yung-Hsu’s creative approach is a repetitive and meditative training process. By continuously kneading, compiling, and extending the clay with his hands, the clay then responds naturally by expanding, tearing, and changing shapes. With each repetitive gesture and inhalation and exhalation, the artist’s aesthetic conscious continues to communicate with the dynamic internal energy of the clay, and during the process, he forgets about his own physical awareness and pain. The creative process leads to a state of union between the object and the self. As an oriental Zen energy infuses into the artwork, the medium of “clay" is transcended beyond its original definition and limitation. “To see a world in a grain of sand. And a heaven in a wild flower." Through the artist’s gestures, ordinary earth is transformed into eternal poetic verses.
